MRT service on the North East Line (NEL) was suspended for about 40 minutes on Chinese New Year Eve night (Feb 18) due to a signalling fault.
At 10.45pm yesterday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) tweeted on behalf of SBS Transit that service was delayed and that commuters should expect additional travel time of up to 10 minutes.
Shortly later, the stretch of service from HarbourFront to Potong Pasir was suspended, with about nine stations affected including Chinatown, where thousands are for CNY festivities. About 15 minutes later, SBS announced that service between Outram Park and Potong Pasir was still not up and running and that free bus rides were available at designated bus stops near affected stations.
Service only resumed an hour later, but commuters were told to expect additional travelling time of up to 15 minutes.
CNA reported commuters ‘taking to social media to complain’ about the disruption, with a Twitter user, @sanifoo, saying “Now I’m stranded at Potong Pasir who’s paying public holiday surcharge to Jurong??”. Another said no official announcements were made.
